San Luis Obispo County Opens Draft Parks & Recreation Master Plan for Public Comment

San Luis Obispo County is inviting community members to help shape the future of its parks and recreation system. The county released a public‑review draft of a comprehensive Master Plan that outlines a sustainable, system‑wide network of parks, trails, dog parks, campgrounds, lakes, golf courses, event spaces and recreation programs.

Why the plan matters to families and neighborhoods

The Master Plan, developed over more than a year with input from local stakeholders, seeks to ensure that public spaces remain safe, accessible, and family‑friendly. County officials emphasized that resident feedback is essential for preserving the quality of life that many families cherish in the Central Coast region.

How to participate

The public comment period runs through September 30. Residents can submit written comments via the county’s website, or they can join an online workshop hosted by the planning consultant, Bluepoint Planning, on September 9 from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. Registration is required in advance, and the session will provide an overview of the draft and a chance for participants to ask questions.

Key components of the draft plan

  • Community parks – Enhancements to existing neighborhood parks and proposals for new green spaces.
  • Dog parks – Designated off‑leash areas to accommodate pet owners while protecting other park users.
  • Camping and lakes – Expanded camping facilities and improved lake access for fishing and recreation.
  • Golf courses – Recommendations for maintaining and potentially expanding public golf amenities.
  • Trails and event spaces – New multi‑use trails and flexible venues for community events, festivals, and outdoor gatherings.

Each element is intended to support a vibrant, active lifestyle for families, seniors, and youth while preserving the natural beauty of the county.

County’s vision for a sustainable future

Officials highlighted that the plan incorporates sustainability goals, such as water‑wise landscaping, renewable‑energy options for park facilities, and strategies to protect wildlife habitats. By aligning recreation development with environmental stewardship, the county hopes to balance growth with the preservation of the region’s unique ecosystems.

Next steps after the comment period

After September 30, the county will review all feedback, make revisions as needed, and present a final version to the Board of Supervisors for approval. Once adopted, the Master Plan will guide funding decisions, capital projects, and program development for the next decade.

Community members who want to stay informed can sign up for updates on the county’s website or follow the County’s social‑media channels. Participation is encouraged, as the plan’s success depends on the voices of those who use the parks every day.
