Trump administration pushes G‑20 for hands‑off AI rules at North Carolina summit

Washington – The Trump administration is set to use a high‑profile gathering of G‑20 commerce ministers and industry leaders in North Carolina to champion a hands‑off approach to artificial‑intelligence regulation. A senior White House official told Reuters the United States will press fellow members not to create new regulatory agencies that could stifle innovation.

North Carolina hosts pro‑growth AI dialogue

The two‑day summit, beginning Tuesday, is being hosted by U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and White House technology adviser Michael Kratsios. Kratsios, a former executive at Scale AI, said the event will advance a “pro‑growth vision for the future of emerging technologies.”

Key speakers include OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman and Nvidia founder Jensen Huang, who will appear with Secretary Lutnick on Wednesday. SpaceX founder Elon Musk, Meta executive Dina Powell McCormick, and venture‑capitalist David Sacks are slated to address delegates via video on Tuesday.

U.S. seeks to keep AI development within American ecosystem

According to the official, the United States will urge G‑20 participants not to establish new oversight bodies for AI, arguing that existing market forces and voluntary standards are sufficient. The administration believes a lighter regulatory touch will preserve the United States’ leadership in the sector and protect American businesses from restrictive foreign rules.

“It has increased urgency for this administration to make sure that the rest of the world stays within the American tech ecosystem and doesn’t seek alternatives,” said Vivek Chilukuri, a technology and national‑security fellow at the Center for a New American Security.

China’s growing AI capabilities raise security concerns

The push for minimal regulation comes as China accelerates its development of open‑weight AI models—systems whose core components are publicly accessible. U.S. officials warn that these models could erode the competitive edge of American firms such as Anthropic and OpenAI, and may pose security risks if leveraged by hostile actors.

While the Chinese embassy in Washington declined comment, the United States highlighted the strategic importance of keeping AI innovation aligned with American values and security standards.

Broader context and upcoming G‑20 summit

The North Carolina meeting is part of a series of pre‑summit gatherings leading up to the G‑20 leaders’ summit in Miami this December. Canadian officials will also attend, emphasizing a balance between rapid innovation and public trust.

As the United States and Canada navigate a trade dispute initiated by President Trump, the AI dialogue underscores the administration’s broader effort to protect American industry while promoting responsible growth.
