Salt, Smoke, and a Cold Beer: Why Crooked Hammock Didn’t Make This List But The Tides Bar & Grille Absolutely Does

There is a particular kind of afternoon that only happens at the beach — the kind where the sun is dropping low over the Atlantic, the breeze is just enough to keep things comfortable, and you realize you are exactly where you are supposed to be. For me, that afternoon happened at The Tides Bar & Grille, the oceanfront restaurant tucked inside the Springmaid Beach Resort on the south end of Myrtle Beach, and I have been thinking about it ever since.

Springmaid sits quietly off the main tourist strip on Springmaid Beach, which already gives it a different energy from the neon-lit chaos you might associate with a Myrtle Beach dining experience. The resort itself has a long history — it was originally a textile magnate’s private retreat — and that sense of old-Carolina character seeps pleasantly into everything around it, including The Tides. The restaurant is open-air and casual, perched right at the edge of the property with views that stretch from the pier to the open horizon, and the crowd tends to be a happy mix of resort guests, locals who know better, and savvy visitors who did their homework.

What I love most about The Tides is that it does not try to be more than it is. The menu leans into classic coastal fare — fresh local seafood, cold cocktails, cold beer — and executes it well. I ordered a cup of she-crab soup that was rich and deeply flavored, the kind that reminds you why South Carolina has been doing this particular dish better than everyone else for two hundred years. A grouper sandwich followed, grilled simply and served on a toasted roll with a side of hand-cut fries. Nothing overthought. Nothing underseasoned. Just good, honest food eaten in salt air with sand still between your toes.

The drink program is equally unpretentious. Frozen cocktails, cold drafts, and a solid wine list by the glass — nothing on this menu is asking to be photographed for twenty minutes before you consume it. You order at the counter, find a table on the deck, and let the rhythm of the ocean take over. It is refreshingly low-pressure.

The location off the resort also means you are never dealing with the shoulder-to-shoulder crowds that can plague more centrally situated spots. Parking is manageable. The vibe is relaxed. Families with sandy kids fit right in alongside couples on a quieter getaway, which is a harder balance to strike than most restaurants make it look.

If you visit Myrtle Beach and spend all your meals on the main drag, you will eat fine — but you will miss something. The Tides represents what this stretch of coastline actually feels like when you slow down a little and pay attention. It is the kind of meal you remember not because of a single showstopping dish, but because everything around it — the light, the sound of the waves, the easy conversation — added up to something genuinely good.

Head south past the main boulevard, follow the signs toward Springmaid Beach, and give yourself at least two hours. Order the she-crab soup. Get a frozen drink even if you think you are not a frozen-drink person. Watch the sun move across the water. You will not regret a single minute of it.
