Trump administration begins controversial renovation of East Potomac Golf Links

On Tuesday, Sept. 1, President Donald Trump announced the commencement of a large‑scale renovation of the East Potomac Golf Links, a historic public golf course in Washington, D.C. The project, overseen by the Trump administration, aims to transform the existing nine‑hole course into a championship‑level facility.

Local groups raise legal challenges

Alex Rosen, founder of the nonprofit Save East Po, warned that the work would violate federal law and said his organization is prepared to continue fighting in court. “They will be breaking the law, and it will be challenged in court,” Rosen told WTOP.

The D.C. Preservation League, another nonprofit dedicated to protecting historic sites, has already filed a lawsuit seeking to halt the redesign. Congressional Democrats have also pressed the Trump administration for detailed information about the plan, expressing concern that standard historic‑preservation and environmental reviews have been bypassed.

Procedural concerns and tree removal

According to Rosen, the project has not undergone the required approvals for historic place protection or environmental safeguards. He pointed to a recent removal of roughly 60 trees on the course, describing the cuts as “not invasive trees” and suggesting they were part of the redesign rather than routine maintenance.

The National Park Service, which manages the golf course, maintains that the tree removal was a standard safety measure, removing hazardous, dying, or invasive trees. The agency says no construction tied to the redesign has begun beyond that work.

Administration’s stance and upcoming court hearing

The Trump administration has publicly stated it will respect any limits imposed by a judge, though it has not offered detailed assurances about how the project will proceed if it moves beyond maintenance activities. A court status hearing on the matter is scheduled for Thursday, where the administration’s compliance with procedural requirements will be examined.

Rosen framed the dispute as a broader question of public‑land stewardship: “This boils down to whether we the people own our public lands or if the temporary president does.” The upcoming hearing will determine whether the renovation can continue under the current legal framework.
