Iowa State names Aiden Flora as starting running back for 2026 season

ISU football fans received their first look at the new Jimmy Rogers era on Tuesday when the Cyclones released the inaugural depth chart for the 2026 season. The most notable change is the promotion of Aiden Flora, a graduate of Ames‑Des Moines High School, to the starting running back spot and the role of primary punt returner.

Key players on the offensive roster

Flora, who joined the Cyclones as a freshman, earned the trust of the coaching staff with his explosive runs in practice. He will lead the ground attack and handle punt returns, giving the team a dynamic play‑maker in the backfield. Backup running back duties go to transfer Cameron Pettaway from Bowling Green, who also assumes the top kick‑return responsibilities.

At quarterback, senior Jaylen Raynor retains the starting job, providing continuity after a solid 2025 campaign. The backup quarterback position remains open, with sophomore Connor Moberly, a graduate of Southeast Polk High School, and transfer Zane Flores from Oklahoma State listed together on the chart.

Returning starters on defense and special teams

The defensive unit features several experienced players who will anchor the Cyclones’ front seven. Defensive tackle Zaimir Hawk and linebacker Carson Willich are slated to start, bringing size and leadership to the line of scrimmage. Strong safety duties will be handled by Drew Surges, who finished last season as a reliable member of the secondary.

Special teams also see familiar faces. Kyle Konrardy, the Cyclones’ star kicker, returns to handle field‑goal and extra‑point duties. Tight end Vince Benetti, Flora’s high‑school teammate at ADM, secures a starting spot at the position, adding a proven connection to the backfield.

Season opener and what’s next

Iowa State opens its 2026 campaign on Saturday at noon, hosting Southeast Missouri State at Jack Trice Stadium. The game will be streamed on ESPN+, giving fans nationwide access to the first glimpse of the new depth chart in action.

Coach Jimmy Rogers, entering his first season, emphasized the importance of depth and competition during the press conference. “We have a talented group of players ready to step up,” Rogers said. “Aiden’s work ethic and explosiveness make him the right choice to lead our rushing attack, and we’re excited to see how the whole unit performs together.”

With 83 newcomers added to the roster, the Cyclones face a significant integration challenge. However, the blend of seasoned starters and fresh talent suggests a balanced approach as the team aims to improve on last year’s record and contend for a bowl invitation.

Looking ahead

Beyond the opener, Iowa State’s schedule includes matchups against conference rivals such as Oklahoma State, Texas, and Kansas State. Success will hinge on how quickly the new depth chart settles and how effectively the coaching staff can harness the depth of the roster.

Fans are encouraged to attend the home opener or tune in via ESPN+ to support the Cyclones as they embark on a promising new chapter under Coach Rogers.
