Boise Balloon Classic Returns to Ann Morrison Park for Family Fun

Boise residents and visitors can look to the sky this week for a colorful reminder that summer isn’t over yet. The Spirit of Boise Balloon Classic returns to Ann Morrison Park, bringing more than 40 hot‑air balloons, a Night Glow celebration and family‑friendly attractions to the city’s beloved “city of trees.”

History of the event

The balloon rally first lifted off over Boise in 1991 and became a staple of the Boise Riverfest until 2002. After a seven‑year hiatus, the event was revived in 2009 thanks to a partnership with local supporters Scott Spencer, Lori Spencer, Kevin Godwin and Mike Owens. Since then, the classic has grown into an annual tradition that showcases the region’s love of community, faith and family.

What to expect this week

Starting Wednesday, Ann Morrison Park opens its gates early each morning so families can watch the balloons rise and speak with pilots about how the aircraft operate. Children will have the chance to ask questions and learn about the science behind the soaring vessels.

Friday night features the popular Night Glow event. Balloons are inflated on the ground while music plays, creating a glowing spectacle that delights both kids and adults. A large bouncy‑house area will also be set up to keep younger attendees entertained.

Free and family‑focused

One of the hallmarks of the Boise Balloon Classic is its commitment to remaining free and accessible. The event is supported by local radio stations, including Idaho’s historic 580 KIDO, and volunteers who help keep the atmosphere safe and welcoming. Organizers encourage visitors to arrive early, especially on weekdays, to avoid crowds and enjoy a more relaxed viewing experience.

Community impact

Beyond the visual delight, the balloon classic brings together local businesses, churches and civic groups. Vendors set up booths offering food, crafts and information about community services, reinforcing the event’s role as a gathering place for families who share traditional values.

Mayor Lauren McLean praised the event in a recent statement, noting that it “highlights Boise’s spirit of togetherness and celebrates the beauty of our outdoors while providing a safe, wholesome activity for children and parents alike.”

Plan your visit

Ann Morrison Park is located at the heart of Boise, adjacent to the Boise River Greenbelt. Parking is available in the park’s lot and on nearby streets. Attendees are asked to follow park rules, keep noise levels respectful and clean up after themselves to preserve the park’s family‑friendly environment.

The Spirit of Boise Balloon Classic runs from September 1 through September 6. For the latest schedule, weather updates and a full list of participating balloons, visit the official event website or follow local radio stations on social media.
