Journalist Sara Carter recently shared details about a significant 2016 meeting at CIA headquarters, where she was questioned by then-CIA Director John Brennan regarding President Donald Trump and Michael Flynn. Speaking on the ‘Hang Out with Sean Hannity’ podcast, Carter described the meeting as tense and revealing of the political climate at the time.
Inside the CIA Meeting
Carter recounted how Brennan asked her about her feelings towards President-elect Trump and Michael Flynn during their 45-minute interview in December 2016. Carter responded by asking Brennan how he wanted her to feel, which she noted ended the casual conversation but not the interview itself.
This meeting occurred during a period when the FBI had launched a counterintelligence investigation, known as ‘Crossfire Hurricane,’ into alleged Russian election interference and connections to Trump campaign associates, including Flynn. Brennan, serving as CIA director under the Obama administration, was a key figure during these investigations.
Flynn’s Involvement
Michael Flynn, a retired Army lieutenant general and incoming national security advisor, became a focal point of the investigation after his conversations with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak were wiretapped by U.S. intelligence. These discussions involved sanctions imposed by former President Barack Obama. Although Flynn’s identity was initially concealed in intelligence transcripts, declassified documents later revealed that Brennan requested Flynn’s identity be disclosed. Flynn pleaded guilty in 2017 to lying to the FBI about these discussions, but was pardoned by President Trump in 2020.
Carter’s Reflections
Carter expressed her belief that Brennan was attempting to assess her political loyalty during their meeting. She stated, ‘I think he realized at that moment that I wasn’t going to be played.’ Carter has since taken on a significant role in the Trump administration as the director of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy, often referred to as the ‘drug czar.’ In this capacity, she has committed to combating narco-terrorism and prioritizing the health and safety of the American people.
In her statement following her confirmation, Carter emphasized the importance of holding narco-terrorists accountable for the harm they cause to American families and communities. She stated, ‘This is a turning point for our nation. President Trump is putting the American people first. Under his leadership, we will reassert our fundamental right to live healthy lives.’
