Los Angeles – In a candid interview with KABC-TV, Jake Reiner, the 35‑year‑old son of celebrated director Rob Reiner and his wife Michele Singer Reiner, described the overwhelming grief he has endured since the brutal murders of his parents eight months ago.
Family tragedy and strained sibling ties
Rob Reiner, 78, and Michele Singer Reiner, 70, were found stabbed to death in their Brentwood home on Dec. 14. Their son Nick Reiner, 32, was arrested hours later and is currently awaiting trial on two counts of murder. Jake said he has not spoken to Nick and has not attended any of his brother’s court hearings.
“He’s in jail, so, you know, it’s like I physically lost my parents and then Nick was arrested. And it’s like now, it’s just me and Romy,” Jake told the station, referring to his 28‑year‑old sister.
Living with the pain
Jake explained that each day feels like “eight years at the same time, and it also feels like eight minutes.” He said the loss manifests as anger and a sense of unfairness, adding, “I’ll never understand why this happened.” He declined to answer questions about his brother’s role in the murders.
Continuing his parents’ mission
Despite the tragedy, Jake remains committed to the charitable work his parents championed. He plans to attend the Children’s Institute gala in November, an organization that supports children and families in the Los Angeles area. “It’s going to be hard, but I feel responsible for making sure people know them and remember them,” he said.

Nick Reiner, who has a long history of drug addiction and mental‑health struggles, co‑wrote the 2016 film “Being Charlie” with his father, a project meant to help the younger Reiner connect with his dad. Jake recalled that his parents “never stopped wanting to help him.” Earlier this summer, Nick filed a petition to access a $1.5 million trust fund for his defense, a request that Jake declined to comment on.
