Riverside County investigators announced Thursday that the last unidentified victim of serial killer Keith Hunter Jesperson – the notorious “Happy Face Killer” – has been positively identified. The woman long referred to only as “Claudia” is now confirmed to be Lydia Jane Wade McWhorter, a native of Texas.
DNA work cracks the case
McWhorter’s remains were discovered on August 30, 1992, along Highway 95 about seven miles north of Blythe, California. For more than three decades, authorities could not link the skeletal remains to a name. In 2024, Riverside County’s cold‑case unit renewed its effort, using genetic genealogy to connect the unknown victim to relatives on her father’s side. That lead identified Summer Gonzales as a paternal half‑sister, but a maternal link remained missing.
Later that year, investigators followed a new lead to a direct maternal relative of McWhorter. A fresh DNA sample taken from that relative matched the remains, allowing the district attorney’s office to confirm the identity earlier this week. The confirmation brings closure to McWhorter’s sisters, who spent decades wondering what happened to their sibling after she vanished from Texas in the early 1990s.
Family receives long‑awaited answers
“I want to thank the public for the role you play in our investigations,” said Billy Hester, supervising investigator of the Cold Case Unit, in a news release. “When people take the time to share information, submit a tip or simply pay attention to what is happening in their community, it can make a real difference.” Hester added that the identification should help the family lay Lydia to rest with the dignity she deserves.
The Riverside County District Attorney’s Division of Victim Services is now working with McWhorter’s family to determine how best to honor her memory and arrange a proper burial.
Jesperson’s crimes and conviction
Keith Jesperson, a long‑haul truck driver, confessed to killing eight women between 1990 and 1995 across several states, including California, Washington, Oregon, Florida, Nebraska and Wyoming. He earned the moniker “Happy Face Killer” after sending letters to the media signed with a smiley face. Jesperson was arrested in 1995, pleaded guilty to McWhorter’s murder in Riverside County on January 8, 2010, and received a sentence of 25 years to life. He now serves multiple life sentences in Oregon.
With the identification of Lydia McWhorter, Riverside County’s cold‑case team has closed the final unidentified‑victim case linked to Jesperson’s convictions, marking a significant milestone for law‑enforcement and the victim’s relatives.
