Ken Paxton’s Senate Run in Texas Overshadowed by Past Controversies

Ken Paxton, the Texas Attorney General, has emerged victorious in the Republican primary runoff for the Texas Senate, setting the stage for a contentious general election against Democratic nominee James Talarico. Paxton’s political journey has been marked by a series of controversies, yet he continues to be a significant force in Texas politics, bolstered by a crucial endorsement from former President Donald Trump.

Allegations and Legal Challenges

Paxton’s tenure as attorney general has been fraught with legal challenges. Shortly after taking office in 2015, he faced felony securities fraud charges, accused of misleading investors. The case lingered for nearly nine years, concluding with a pretrial agreement in 2024 that required community service and restitution but no plea admission. A related civil case by the US Securities and Exchange Commission was dismissed in 2016.

In 2020, Paxton’s top deputies reported him to the FBI, alleging abuse of office to benefit Nate Paul, a real estate investor and political donor. This led to a whistleblower lawsuit after some aides were fired. A court ruled in favor of the aides, awarding them $6.6 million, a decision Paxton initially appealed but later dropped.

Impeachment and Acquittal

The whistleblower claims were central to Paxton’s 2023 impeachment by the Texas House, a bipartisan move that threatened his political career. However, the Texas Senate acquitted him of all 16 articles of impeachment, with only two Republican senators voting for conviction. Trump’s influence was evident as he pressured senators to acquit Paxton and criticized the Republican House speaker involved in the impeachment process.

Personal Life and Campaign

Paxton’s personal life has also been under scrutiny. Allegations of an extramarital affair surfaced during the impeachment trial, with his former chief of staff testifying to the affair. Paxton’s wife, state Sen. Angela Paxton, filed for divorce in 2025, citing “biblical grounds,” though Paxton has largely avoided addressing these claims publicly.

Despite these controversies, Paxton’s campaign remains focused on portraying Talarico as an extreme candidate, while Talarico and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee emphasize Paxton’s alleged corruption. As the general election approaches, both candidates are preparing for a heated battle over Texas’s future in the Senate.
