Cincinnati Teen Raises $10K for Down Syndrome Association Through Card Fundraiser

In Blue Ash, Ohio, a heartfelt initiative by a local high school student has made a significant impact. Seventeen-year-old Ezra Cohen, a junior at Cincinnati Country Day School, organized a sports card fundraiser called “Cards for Community” to honor his uncle, Herschel Gutman, who has Down syndrome. The event successfully raised over $10,000 for the Down Syndrome Association of Greater Cincinnati.

Community Support and Family Inspiration

Ezra’s passion for sports cards began with his uncle, Herschel, who introduced him to the hobby. Their shared interest blossomed into a meaningful project aimed at supporting a cause close to their hearts. The event took place at Black Sheep Performance and featured more than 40 vendors offering sports cards, Pokémon cards, and other collectibles. Hundreds of collectors and community members attended, contributing to the fundraiser’s success.

Ezra’s journey from a hobbyist to a young entrepreneur with his business, Beacon Cards and Collectibles, reflects his dedication and entrepreneurial spirit. He spent months preparing for the event, balancing his school commitments while promoting the fundraiser across Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky. Despite initial doubts about reaching his $5,000 goal, the community’s overwhelming support helped him surpass expectations.

Raising Awareness and Building Connections

Beyond the financial success, Ezra aimed to foster greater understanding and appreciation for individuals with Down syndrome. “I just want them to know that they’re real humans too, and they have feelings and they’re really fun people,” Ezra shared, emphasizing the importance of seeing beyond stereotypes and forming genuine connections.

The event was a proud moment for Ezra’s family, with his younger brother expressing admiration for Ezra’s efforts and entrepreneurial spirit. Ezra hopes to continue growing “Cards for Community” in the future, building on this year’s success to further support the Down syndrome community.
