San Jose, Calif. – The San Jose Earthquakes announced Wednesday that they have acquired German midfielder Eduard Lowen from St. Louis City SC. The deal includes $425,000 in general allocation money (GAM) and a potential additional $500,000 in conditional GAM tied to performance‑based incentives.
Lowen, 29, joins the Earthquakes after four seasons with St. Louis City. In 84 MLS appearances for the expansion club, he recorded 20 goals and 27 assists, starting 70 of those matches. His most productive season came in 2023, when he contributed 17 assists as St. Louis City finished first in the Western Conference.
“I’m very thankful for this new chapter in my life and career moving to the Bay Area and joining the Earthquakes,” Lowen said in a news release. “I’ll always be grateful for the amazing time I had in St. Louis. I’m excited to build new relationships here in the community and am determined to help this team make a strong playoff push and be successful with this historic club.”
Coach Bruce Arena’s outlook
Head coach Bruce Arena praised Lowen’s experience and versatility. “Eduard is a proven player in this league with the versatility and experience to make an impact in our midfield,” Arena said. “Beyond what he brings on the field, he’s a great person with strong character and leadership qualities. We’re excited to have him in San Jose and look forward to welcoming him to the club.”
Lowen’s recent form includes three goals and three assists in 13 matches this season, with eight starts. His background also features four seasons in Germany’s Bundesliga (2017‑2021) and participation with Germany’s 2020 Olympic team.
St. Louis City’s response
St. Louis City sporting director Corey Wray expressed gratitude for Lowen’s contributions. “Decisions like this are never easy, but we are incredibly grateful for everything Edu has given to this club and for the player and person he has shown himself to be throughout his time in St. Louis,” Wray said.
The Earthquakes will look to integrate Lowen quickly as they prepare for their upcoming match against the Houston Dynamo on Saturday.
Lowen’s arrival adds depth and experience to a midfield that has been a focal point for San Jose’s strategic plans. The club hopes his playmaking ability will help the Earthquakes compete for a postseason berth in the 2026 MLS season.
