Spider‑Man leads summer box office while Nolan’s “The Odyssey” hits record

For the fourth straight weekend, “Spider‑Man: Brand New Day” remained the dominant draw at U.S. and Canadian theaters, pulling in $39 million from 4,006 locations, according to studio estimates released Sunday. The superhero sequel now sits above $854.9 million domestically and is on track to overtake “Avengers: Endgame” as the second‑highest‑grossing domestic release of all time, trailing only “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”.

Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” climbs to new heights

“The Odyssey,” Christopher Nolan’s latest epic, secured third place at the box office with a $19.5 million haul in its sixth weekend. The film has become Nolan’s highest‑grossing title, both at home and abroad, pushing its worldwide total past $1.4 billion. Domestically, it now sits just under $539.1 million, surpassing the $534.9 million previously held by “The Dark Knight” (not adjusted for inflation). Internationally, strong performances in China and Korea added $68 million to the tally.

Other notable performers

Blumhouse’s “Insidious: Out of the Further,” the sixth entry in the horror franchise, earned $25.3 million from 3,303 theaters, making it the second‑largest earner of the weekend. The film’s modest $18 million budget still marks it as the most expensive installment in the series.

Action star Jason Statham’s new thriller “Mutiny” opened in sixth place with $7.5 million from 2,703 locations. The Lionsgate release suffered a brief technical glitch that made it temporarily available for free on Prime Video, which may have impacted its opening numbers.

Comedy “Spa Weekend,” featuring Isla Fisher, Leslie Mann, Anna Faris and Michelle Buteau, earned an estimated $3.1 million from 2,009 screens. PostTrak data showed women comprised about 84 percent of its opening‑week audience. The 25th‑anniversary re‑release of “The Fast and the Furious” posted a similar $3.1 million gross.

Family‑oriented titles also appeared on the list: “Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie” brought in $9.1 million, while “The Magic Faraway Tree,” starring Andrew Garfield, earned $1.4 million from 1,611 screens. The biographical drama “Tony,” about the late Anthony Bourdain, generated $5 million from 1,652 locations.

Summer box‑office outlook

The summer season, which runs through Labor Day, has already produced an estimated $4.4 billion in ticket sales across North America, placing it among the top four highest‑grossing summers on record. Paul Dergarabedian, head of marketplace trends for Rentrak, described the period as potentially “one of the most key and pivotal summer movie seasons ever.”

Michael O’Leary, president and CEO of Cinema United, highlighted the variety of releases as a key factor in the strong performance, noting that the industry is finally recovering from the disruptions caused by the Hollywood strikes of 2023. “The enthusiasm of moviegoers is palpable,” O’Leary said. “There’s an energy in the theater that hasn’t been felt in recent years.”

Overall, 2026 box‑office revenue has surpassed $7 billion, up 20.4 percent from 2025, though still about 7.1 percent below the pre‑pandemic level of 2019.
