Former Illinois deputy convicted of Sonya Massey murder dies in prison

Sean Grayson, a former deputy for the Sangamon County sheriff’s office, died in prison this week while serving a 20‑year sentence for second‑degree murder. Grayson had been convicted last year for the fatal shooting of Sonya Massey, a 36‑year‑old Springfield resident, after she called 911 to report a prowler.

Background of the case

On the night of July 6, 2024, Grayson responded to Masse’s emergency call shortly after 1 a.m. According to body‑camera footage and court testimony, Massey was in her kitchen when she picked up a pot of boiling water. Grayson, who was on the scene, stepped back and later testified that he believed she intended to throw the water at him after she said, “I rebuke you in the name of Jesus.” He said the repeated statement sounded like a threat.

Grayson pointed his firearm at Massey, warned that he would shoot, and after she apologized and dropped to the floor, he fired three rounds, striking her. He declined to render medical aid, and Massey was pronounced dead at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield.

Trial and sentencing

The shooting sparked protests and a statewide call for accountability. In 2025, Sangamon County officials reached a $10 million settlement with Massey’s family. The case also prompted Governor J.B. Pritzker to sign the Sonya Massey Act, a law that tightens background‑check requirements for law‑enforcement hires and took effect at the start of 2026.

During sentencing in January 2026, Grayson, then 32, was sentenced to 20 years for second‑degree murder. He was diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer in 2023, which progressed to stage 4 and spread to his liver, lungs, and rectum. In July, the Illinois Prisoner Review Board denied his request for medical release.

Death in custody

Attorney Daniel Fultz, who represented Grayson at trial, told reporters that Grayson died around noon on Sunday. The exact cause of death has not yet been confirmed, though his advanced cancer is a likely factor. Another defense attorney, Mark Wykoff, noted the severity of Grayson’s illness at sentencing.

The death closes a tragic chapter that began with a 911 call for help and ended with a high‑profile murder conviction, legislative reform, and a multimillion‑dollar settlement for the victim’s family.
