Alphonso Davies, the captain of the Canadian men’s national soccer team, is expected to miss the team’s opening match in the World Cup due to a hamstring injury. This announcement came from head coach Jesse Marsch during a press briefing at Canada’s training camp in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Injury Details and Recovery
Davies sustained the injury on May 6 while playing for Bayern Munich in the Champions League semi-final. Despite this setback, Marsch remains optimistic about Davies’ participation in the World Cup, stating, “I think Alphonso will play in the World Cup.” However, he added that Davies is unlikely to be ready for the opener against Bosnia and Herzegovina on June 12 in Toronto.
Davies has faced several injury challenges over the past year. He suffered an ACL tear in March 2025 while representing Canada, which kept him off the field for a significant period. After returning to play for Bayern Munich in December, he encountered further issues with his hamstring, including a muscle fiber tear in February and a strain in March that caused him to miss two international friendlies.
Team Preparations and Future Matches
Although Davies is not currently with the team in Charlotte, he is expected to join them before their friendly match against Uzbekistan on June 1 in Edmonton. Canada will announce its official World Cup roster on Friday at 7 p.m. ET.
Following the opener in Toronto, Canada will continue its World Cup journey with matches against Qatar on June 18 and Switzerland on June 24, both taking place in Vancouver.
