Georgia teacher’s brave rescue saves 10‑year‑old at Myrtle Beach, linking two families

On August 3, a routine beach outing turned tragic at Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, when a rip current began pulling a 10‑year‑old girl, Summer McCallum, out to sea. Her uncle, Ernest McCallum, spotted the danger and raced into the water, but a stranger leapt in behind him.

Teacher‑coach answers the call

Derrick Moore, a 47‑year‑old elementary‑school teacher from the Atlanta suburbs, was enjoying a day at the shore before the new school year began. Known to his students at Rockbridge Elementary as “Coach,” Moore did not hesitate. He swam toward the struggling child, instructed her to hold his arm, and pushed her toward rescuers who were arriving with boogie boards.

Moore’s quick action gave Summer the chance to be pulled to safety. Unfortunately, the powerful current swept Moore away. His body was recovered on August 8, washing ashore near the rescue site, according to the Myrtle Beach Police Department.

Families forever linked

Summer’s uncle, Ernest, recounted the moment his niece’s head bobbed in the water and how Moore’s calm direction saved her life. The girl later told her uncle, “Thank you, I really owe my life to you.”

Moore’s own family, including his wife Suzette and their four children, learned of his death through a call from the girl’s fiancée. Suzette described the news as hitting her “like a ton of bricks.” Yet she also expressed pride, saying her son was the type of person who would act that way again.

Moore’s son, Justin, remembered his father as a “father figure to many and a coach to hundreds of athletes & students.” The family has gathered at their Georgia home, sharing stories of his generosity and the countless lives he touched.

Community response

Neighbors, colleagues, and former students have praised Moore’s self‑less spirit. Sherry Weeks, a coworker, called him an “energetic, polite, special hero.” Former students at Jolly Elementary, where Moore earned the 2024 Teacher of the Year award, recalled his dedication to extracurricular activities, even starting a soccer team despite never having played the sport himself.

Ernest McCallum said he hopes to speak with Moore’s family to thank them personally and learn more about the man who saved his niece. The two families, bound by loss and gratitude, have found a shared purpose in honoring Moore’s legacy.

Legacy of service

Moore’s sacrifice underscores a broader truth about everyday heroes in our neighborhoods—people who put others before themselves without expectation of reward. His story has resonated across Georgia and South Carolina, reminding faith‑centered families of the Christian principle of loving one’s neighbor.

Funeral arrangements are set for August 26, and the community plans a memorial service to celebrate Moore’s life and the lasting impact of his courageous act.
