A Spanish national, who was among those evacuated from the MV Hondius cruise ship earlier this month, has tested positive for hantavirus. The individual is currently in quarantine at a military hospital in Madrid, according to Spain’s Health Ministry.
The MV Hondius, a luxury liner, had been carrying around 150 passengers and crew from 23 different countries when a cluster of severe respiratory illnesses was reported to the World Health Organization on May 2. The Spanish nationals were evacuated to the island of Tenerife before being transported to Madrid for quarantine.
This is the second confirmed case of hantavirus among the 14 Spanish nationals evacuated from the ship. The infected individual has been moved to an isolation unit at the Gómez Ulla Hospital in Madrid. The Health Ministry emphasized that this development does not alter the risk situation for the general population, as the case was detected among those already in quarantine.
The situation continues to be monitored closely by health authorities to ensure the safety and well-being of all individuals involved. The Ministry has been transparent in its communication, providing updates via social media and other channels to keep the public informed.
