Meloni Coalition Secures Victory in Venice Mayoral Election

In a surprising turn of events, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s right-wing coalition has secured a victory in the Venice mayoral election, according to projections released on Monday. This win allows the coalition to retain control of one of Italy’s most prominent cities during a round of local elections held across the country.

Defying Polls and Expectations

The election in Venice was closely watched, especially after recent controversies surrounding Russia’s participation in the Biennale Art Festival. Despite opinion polls earlier this month suggesting a lead for the center-left, center-right candidate Simone Venturini emerged victorious with nearly 51% of the vote. His main opponent garnered 39%, allowing Venturini to avoid a runoff election, which is required when no candidate achieves more than 50% of the vote.

Polling company Youtrend confirmed Venturini’s victory, citing the significant lead as decisive. Giovanni Donzelli, a senior lawmaker with Meloni’s Brothers of Italy party, commented on the outcome, noting that the opposition’s narrative of a center-right crisis was proven incorrect by the election results.

Implications for Future Elections

This municipal election was the first major electoral test for Meloni’s government since a setback in a justice referendum in March. The results in Venice, along with other local elections, are seen as indicative of the political climate leading up to the general elections scheduled for next year. The two main political blocs in Italy are currently viewed as being in a close race that will influence the balance of power in 2027.

Elsewhere in Italy, the center-left saw success in Salerno, where Vincenzo De Luca was re-elected for a fifth term. In Messina, former Mayor Federico Basile, who is not aligned with either major coalition, secured another term. Meanwhile, the center-right prevailed in Reggio Calabria, a city previously governed by the left since 2014.
