Renton Advances Community-Driven Revitalization in Benson Hill

Renton is taking significant steps to revitalize the Benson Hill neighborhood, focusing on community input and development. This initiative, discussed in a recent city meeting, aims to breathe new life into the area following its annexation into Renton in 2008.

Community-Driven Planning

During the May 11 committee meeting, Planning Director Matt Herrera and Redevelopment Manager Paul Hintz provided updates on the Benson Hill Community Plan. This plan, distinct from comprehensive planning, emphasizes a bottom-up approach, gathering direct feedback from residents to shape development.

Herrera highlighted the importance of community involvement, stating, “Community planning allows us to directly engage with neighborhoods to understand their priorities.” This approach has identified the enhancement of Cascade Village, a once-thriving shopping center, as a key community desire.

Economic and Infrastructure Development

Despite improvements, Cascade Village has not seen new development since the plan’s adoption. The city is considering zoning amendments to incentivize redevelopment, potentially attracting facilities like an urgent care center or vocational school to address local service gaps.

The plan also prioritizes multimodal transportation, aiming to improve connectivity and safety on 116th Avenue SE. While funding remains a challenge, incremental improvements continue as new developments arise.

Recreational and Safety Enhancements

Recreational opportunities are expanding with plans to formalize the Tapeworm Trail network for mountain biking and improve access to parks. These efforts aim to boost local economies and community pride.

Safety initiatives include supporting neighborhood cleanups and fostering relationships between police, residents, and business owners. These efforts are part of a broader strategy to enhance community identity and pride.

Looking ahead, Renton plans to apply this community-focused model to other neighborhoods, starting with the Valley Community Plan.
