Nevada High School’s football program steps onto the field next Friday night to defend its 3A state championship. The Cubs, fresh off the program’s first ever title in 2025, will open the season against Grinnell at 7:30 p.m. in Week 1.
Returning veterans anchor the squad
Only six starters from the championship team are back this year – two on defense and four on offense. Head coach Andy Kleeman, now in his 11th season, highlighted the importance of those returning players in setting the tone for the newcomers.
“People forget these guys were also practicing against these players last year,” Kleeman said. “Iron sharpens iron, and in our program we know we have good players. I’m certain our kids will play hard this year.”
New leaders step up
Quarterback Colton Pederson, a newcomer to the starting lineup, summed up the team’s mindset: “New year, new team, what are we going to do about it?” Senior linebacker Dane Spykerman echoed that sentiment, emphasizing focus and resilience.
“It’s sticking to what we know and not letting any of the outside noise get to us and get to our head,” Spykerman said. “There are a lot of people saying things about us, but they haven’t seen us play yet this year. They don’t know what kind of team we are, and it is going to be fun to go and show them.”
Community pride and expectations
The Cubs’ title run last season captured the attention of the Nevada community, marking a milestone for the school’s athletic history. Parents, alumni, and local supporters are eager to see whether the new roster can sustain the momentum.
Local businesses have already begun displaying team colors, and the school’s booster club is preparing a celebration for the opening game. The atmosphere promises to be one of anticipation, with many hoping the Cubs will add another chapter to their growing legacy.
Looking ahead
Beyond the opening matchup, the season schedule pits Nevada against several other strong 3A programs. Coach Kleeman remains optimistic, noting that the blend of experienced veterans and fresh talent creates a balanced and competitive squad.
“We have a lot of new players who are eager to prove themselves,” Kleeman added. “Our tradition of hard work and teamwork will guide us through the challenges ahead.”
The first game of the season will be streamed on the school’s athletics website, and tickets are available through the school’s ticket office. Fans are encouraged to arrive early to support the team and enjoy the pre‑game festivities.
