The Varsity Has Been Feeding Atlanta’s Hunger for Over 90 Years — and It Shows No Signs of Slowing Down

Pull up to the corner of Spring Street and North Avenue in Midtown Atlanta, and you’ll immediately understand why The Varsity has been a civic institution since 1928. The unmistakable red-and-white building sprawls across two city blocks, the neon sign buzzes with vintage authority, and the smell of hot dogs and fresh-fried onion rings drifts into the street like a standing invitation. This is not a nostalgia act. This is the real thing.

Founded by Frank Gordy, The Varsity bills itself as the world’s largest drive-in restaurant, and the numbers back it up. On a busy day — say, a Georgia Tech home game Saturday — the kitchen can serve upwards of 30,000 people. The parking lot fills with cars, the dining rooms hum with conversation spanning every age and ZIP code in metro Atlanta, and somewhere near the front counter, a carhop in an orange cap is moving faster than you thought humanly possible.

Ordering here is half the fun. The counter staff greet you with a brisk, cheerful “What’ll ya have?” the moment you step up, and they mean it — the line moves, and dithering is mildly frowned upon. Regulars know exactly what they want: a Chili Steak (that’s a chili-smothered burger, for the uninitiated), a bag of rings, a frosted orange, and maybe a slice of pie for the road. The frosted orange — a creamy, blended citrus drink that splits the difference between a milkshake and a Creamsicle — is arguably the single most iconic item on the menu, and absolutely worth the calories.

The menu itself is a portrait of American diner cooking at its most satisfying. The hot dogs are snappy and perfectly dressed, the fried apple pie is a warm, golden pocket of comfort, and the onion rings arrive crackling and barely manageable in the best possible way. Nothing here is trying to reinvent itself. Everything here is trying to be exactly what it has always been, and that consistency is deeply, genuinely comforting.

What makes The Varsity more than a meal is the atmosphere. Presidents, athletes, musicians, and generations of Georgia Tech students have sat in these booths. The walls are lined with photographs and memorabilia that chart Atlanta’s growth from a mid-century Southern city into the sprawling metropolis it is today. Eating here feels like reading a chapter of that history with your hands wrapped around a paper cup of sweet tea.

There are additional locations across the metro area, but the original Midtown outpost on North Avenue is the one worth making the trip for. Come on a Friday evening, grab a spot at the counter, and let the whole beautiful organized chaos wash over you. Atlanta has changed enormously since 1928. The Varsity, thankfully, has stayed exactly itself.
