Garden Grove Chemical Tank No Longer Threatens Explosion, Officials Confirm

Residents in Garden Grove, California, faced a tense situation as a chemical tank at an aerospace facility posed a significant threat of explosion or leakage. The tank, containing methyl methacrylate, an industrial chemical used in plastic manufacturing, had been overheating, prompting the evacuation of approximately 50,000 people.

Threat Averted

Local authorities have now confirmed that the immediate threat of a Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapor Explosion (BLEVE) has been eliminated. The Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA) announced that the temperature within the tank has decreased, reducing the risk of a catastrophic fireball.

OCFA Interim Chief TJ McGovern expressed relief, stating, “We are happy to report that the threat of a BLEVE is now off the table. That threat has been eliminated.” Despite this positive development, OCFA Division Chief Craig Covey emphasized that evacuation orders remain in effect. “We want to be clear that the evacuation zones are still in play,” he said, urging residents to comply with the ongoing safety measures.

Ongoing Precautions

The incident began when signs of overheating were detected in the 34,000-gallon tank at GKN Aerospace, a company involved in manufacturing engines and landing gear for aircraft. The situation was deemed “unprecedented,” leading to a state of emergency declaration by California Governor Gavin Newsom.

Efforts to cool the tank and relieve pressure have been successful, with a crack discovered by firefighters helping to stabilize the situation. Authorities continue to monitor air quality to ensure no chemical leaks occur.

Within the evacuation zone, which spans roughly 10 square miles, critical infrastructure such as schools, hospitals, and law enforcement stations remain affected. Roads in the area are also closed, impacting daily activities.

While areas outside the evacuation zone are considered safe, the OCFA has advised residents to remain vigilant and patient as the situation is resolved. “We appreciate your support and the patience while we work through this incident together,” Covey added.
