Fort Dodge industrial park earns Iowa Certified Site status, boosting job prospects

Fort Dodge officials announced that the city’s 720‑acre industrial park, branded as Iowa’s Crossroads of Global Innovation, has received Iowa Certified Site designation. The certification, granted by the Iowa Economic Development Authority (IEDA) and the Iowa Finance Authority, signals that the site has completed key preparatory work, making it more attractive to companies seeking to expand or locate new operations in the state.

What the certification means

According to Debi Durham, director of IEDA and the Iowa Finance Authority, the designation reduces risk for prospective investors by confirming that the community has addressed essential infrastructure, permitting and utility considerations ahead of time. “Site certification shows that a community has done key preparation upfront to compete for new investment and jobs when opportunities arise,” Durham said in a news release.

State data indicate that Iowa Certified Sites have collectively attracted more than $2.3 billion in capital investment, suggesting that the Fort Dodge park could see significant private‑sector spending once developers move forward.

Location advantages

The park enjoys direct access to Iowa Highway 7, with U.S. Highway 20 nearby to the south, facilitating truck transportation. Rail service is also within reach, as the site borders tracks operated by Canadian National Railway Company and Union Pacific, offering future freight options for large‑scale manufacturing or distribution facilities.

Local leadership’s perspective

Astra Ferris, chief executive officer of the Greater Fort Dodge Growth Alliance, called the certification a “statement that the Fort Dodge region is ready and open for business.” Ferris emphasized that the milestone reflects years of collaboration among local government, economic developers and community stakeholders to position the area as a competitive hub for high‑growth industries.

The designation does not guarantee immediate projects, but it does streamline the timeline for companies that decide to locate in Fort Dodge. By having site‑specific studies, utility agreements and transportation plans already in place, developers can move more quickly from concept to construction.

Potential industry focus

State officials highlighted three sectors where the certified site could see strong interest: bioscience, advanced manufacturing and renewable energy. Each of these industries aligns with Iowa’s broader economic strategy to diversify beyond agriculture and leverage the state’s skilled workforce and research institutions.

Local educators and workforce development agencies are preparing training programs to meet the anticipated demand for skilled labor, ensuring that residents can benefit from the jobs that new investments may bring.

Next steps

The Greater Fort Dodge Growth Alliance will continue marketing the certified site to national and international firms, leveraging the state’s track record of successful projects. Interested companies are encouraged to contact the alliance for detailed site information, available parcels and incentive options.

With the certification now in hand, Fort Dodge joins a select group of Iowa locations positioned to attract major private investment, promising new employment opportunities and economic growth for the community.
