Garden Grove Chemical Tank Poses Explosion Risk, Evacuations Ordered

In Garden Grove, California, a damaged chemical tank at GKN Aerospace has prompted the evacuation of over 50,000 residents due to the risk of an explosion. The tank contains 6,000 to 7,000 gallons of methyl methacrylate, a hazardous chemical used in plastics production. Authorities have been working tirelessly to prevent a disaster by cooling the tank with water to keep the temperature below 85 degrees Fahrenheit.

Evacuation and Safety Measures

The evacuation order was issued over the Memorial Day weekend as a precautionary measure. Firefighters have been on-site, spraying the tank with water to manage the internal temperature and reduce pressure. A crack in the tank, discovered over the weekend, is believed to have helped relieve some pressure, lowering the risk of an explosion.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), methyl methacrylate is a flammable and colorless liquid that can cause respiratory issues and other health problems if inhaled in large quantities. However, tests have shown that air pollution levels in the evacuation zone remain within normal limits.

Potential Risks and Next Steps

If the tank’s temperature rises, the chemical could convert to gas, increasing pressure and the risk of an explosion. Such an event could potentially ignite other tanks at the site, spreading hazardous vapors over a wider area. Orange County’s top health officer, Dr. Regina Chinsio-Kwong, has assured that those outside the evacuation zone, including nearby Disneyland, are not at risk.

Officials, including EPA chief Lee Zeldin, have suggested that a controlled, low-volume release of the chemical might be necessary to safely relieve pressure. GKN Aerospace is actively cooperating with local authorities to manage the situation.

Fire officials planned an all-night mission to monitor the tank’s pressure levels, aiming to prevent the worst-case scenario of an explosion. The situation remains under close observation as authorities work to ensure the safety of Garden Grove residents.
