EasyJet Flight Diverted to Rome Due to Power Bank Safety Concern

An EasyJet flight traveling from Hurghada, Egypt, to London was unexpectedly diverted to Rome after a passenger reported a power bank charging a device in their checked luggage. This incident underscores the ongoing challenges airlines face with lithium-ion battery safety.

Safety Precautions Prompt Diversion

The flight, identified as EZY2618, was cruising at approximately 36,000 feet when the crew was alerted to the potential safety hazard. In accordance with safety regulations, the captain decided to divert the plane to Rome Fiumicino Airport as a precautionary measure. EasyJet emphasized that the safety of its passengers and crew is its highest priority, operating in strict compliance with all manufacturers’ guidelines.

Passengers affected by the diversion were provided with hotel accommodations and meals before continuing their journey to London Luton Airport the following morning.

Regulatory Measures on Power Banks

The International Civil Aviation Organization recently imposed new restrictions on power banks, limiting passengers to two per person and prohibiting their use during flights. Various airlines have implemented their own measures to mitigate risks associated with these devices. For instance, Singapore Airlines has banned the use of power banks for charging devices during flights, while South Korea has prohibited storing power banks and e-cigarettes in overhead compartments following a fire incident on an Air Busan plane.

Lithium-ion batteries, commonly used in consumer electronics, pose a fire risk if overcharged, overheated, or damaged. The Federal Aviation Administration reports 563 incidents involving smoke, fire, or extreme heat related to these batteries on flights over the past two decades, with battery packs accounting for a significant portion of these cases.
