California Mother Advocates for Fairness in Girls’ Sports Amid Transgender Athlete Debate

In California, a debate over fairness in girls’ sports has emerged as Jennifer Oliver, a devoted track mom, speaks out about her daughter’s experience competing against a transgender athlete. Oliver’s daughter, Nieve, recently participated in a high school state qualifying track meet at Moorpark High School, where she faced AB Hernandez, a biological male competing in girls’ events.

Concerns Over Fairness and Safety

Oliver expressed her concerns about fairness and safety in women’s sports, emphasizing that her issue is not with Hernandez personally but with the policies allowing biological males to compete in female sports categories. “There’s no hate,” Oliver stated. “But we also need to do the right thing. My daughter is hoping the adults in charge will do the right thing.”

Hernandez, who has previously won state championships in girls’ track events, continues to dominate in high jump, triple jump, and long jump. This has sparked a broader conversation about the impact on female athletes like Nieve, who, along with others, was unable to claim the top qualifying jump due to Hernandez’s performance.

Legal and Policy Implications

Oliver believes that the state of California’s disregard for a 2025 executive order by former President Donald Trump, which prohibits men in women’s sports, will eventually be addressed by the courts. “We can wait for the season to be over and hope that we’ll see this play out in the courts,” she said, expressing her frustration with the current situation.

The California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) has implemented a rule requiring transgender athletes who win events to share the podium with the highest-placing female, a move that Oliver sees as an acknowledgment of the underlying issues. “Biology is biology,” she remarked, hoping for a resolution that ensures fairness and safety for all athletes.

As the debate continues, Oliver and other advocates for protecting girls’ sports emphasize the need for policies that respect both the rights of transgender athletes and the integrity of female sports competitions.
