Sean Duffy questions Harvard admission for daughter over Christian values

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy used the Department of Transportation’s YouTube series The Great American Roadtrip to raise a personal dilemma that resonates with many faith‑centered families. He warned that Harvard University could expose his daughter, Paloma, to ideas that conflict with the Christian values in which she was raised.

Family concerns about campus culture

“I don’t want them to get one viewpoint,” Duffy said on the episode released Wednesday. “I want them to get a lot of different viewpoints, but I don’t want them fed only one viewpoint that’s contrary to the way my kids were raised.” The comment came after Paloma expressed interest in applying to Harvard, acknowledging she could not turn down the opportunity if accepted.

His wife, Fox News host Rachel Campos‑Duffy, echoed the concern, noting that Harvard might present perspectives at odds with the teachings of the Catholic faith, which she described as the bedrock of their family life.

Recent legal backdrop

The timing of Duffy’s remarks follows a recent court decision by U.S. District Judge Richard Stearns, who dismissed the Trump administration’s lawsuit against Harvard alleging violations of Title VI for failing to protect Jewish and Israeli students from antisemitic harassment. The lawsuit was part of a broader federal effort that, since the early months of the Trump administration, sought to limit Harvard’s participation in the Student and Exchange Visitor Program and freeze certain research funds.

Harvard has faced criticism from the former president, who called the school’s handling of campus antisemitism a “disgrace” and labeled the institution a “total disaster.” The university also dealt with anti‑Israel protests after the 2023 Israel‑Hamas war, with some Jewish students reporting harassment and exclusion.

Road‑trip to Cambridge

Despite his reservations, Duffy and his family traveled to Cambridge, Massachusetts, as part of the limited road‑trip series. While on campus, they met with a Catholic priest who discussed resources for Catholic students, prompting Duffy to soften his stance.

“I think a smart good girl can completely navigate what is a really good school,” Duffy said after the meeting. He added, “Should Paloma have the opportunity to go to Harvard? I am more open. In some ways, we need to trust that what we armed her with will hopefully be enough for her.”

Balancing parental guidance and academic freedom

Duffy emphasized that while he does not expect his daughter to adopt his political views, he believes it is important for her to make informed choices with a “fair representation” of differing perspectives. “You don’t have to believe what I believe, but I do think it’s important that you make those choices for yourself,” he told his daughter.

The discussion highlights a broader conversation among faith‑based families about higher‑education environments that present a wide array of worldviews. As more parents weigh the benefits of elite institutions against potential cultural and ideological challenges, the Duffy family’s experience offers a relatable case study.

Fox News Digital reached out to Harvard University for comment; a response was not immediately available.
