Tornado in Enid Strengthens Bond Between Polish Exchange Student and Host Family

In Enid, Oklahoma, the aftermath of an EF-4 tornado has brought a Polish exchange student, Zofia Konczalska, closer to her host family, the Youngs. The tornado devastated their neighborhood, Gray Ridge, but amidst the destruction, a deeper connection was forged.

Zofia, who hails from Poland, experienced the tornado’s fury firsthand while sheltering in the basement with her host family, Kurt and Ashlyn Young. Recalling the moment, Zofia said, “I just remember us standing in the ruins of the kitchen, getting rained on, and we just all hugged, thankful to be there and able to hug each other.”

Kurt Young, Ashlyn’s father, recounted his harrowing experience during the storm. “We thought it was over. I said, ‘Girls, stay here. Let me go up and check.’ But as I reached the center of the house, I could still hear debris hitting, so I raced back downstairs. Through the window, I saw something I didn’t like—there was nothing left,” he said.

Cyndi Young, Ashlyn’s mother, was on a military base during the tornado and faced a long wait before reuniting with her family. “I couldn’t get off base. It was locked down. I didn’t see them until almost two in the morning,” she shared.

Zofia’s parents, back in Poland, received a call at 3 a.m. from their daughter, alerting them to the situation. Her mother, Grażyna Konczalska, noted, “Just from Zofia’s voice, they knew something serious had happened.” Her father, Mariusz Konczalski, expressed their unfamiliarity with tornadoes, saying, “In Poland, all we knew about tornadoes was from movies.”

Despite the challenges, Zofia and the Youngs have grown closer, forming what Zofia describes as a “real family.” She reflected, “We did everything together, living in temporary housing, and it brought us closer than ever before.”

Recently, Zofia and Ashlyn celebrated their high school graduation, with Zofia’s family traveling from Poland to join the celebration. Grażyna remarked, “Celebrating together after this situation makes us realize what’s really important and appreciate the time we have.”

Looking ahead, Zofia plans to attend college in South Carolina, while Ashlyn will study at the University of Central Oklahoma. Despite the distance, both are committed to maintaining their bond. Zofia said, “She’s not only my best friend but my sister,” and Ashlyn added, “We’re not going to separate because I’ve never met someone who’s always been there for me.”
