Over 2 million U.S. middle and high school students use tobacco products as school year begins

As students head back to classrooms this fall, public‑health officials are reminding families and schools to talk openly about the dangers of nicotine. The latest National Youth Tobacco Survey, conducted by the FDA and CDC, shows that 7.2% of middle and high school students – about 2.01 million youth – used a tobacco product in the 30 days prior to the survey.

What the numbers reveal

E‑cigarettes remain the most popular tobacco product among adolescents. Approximately 1.44 million students reported current e‑cigarette use. Of those, more than four in ten said they vaped on at least 20 of the past 30 days, and one in four reported daily use.

Flavored varieties dominate the market. Nearly nine in ten youth who vape choose flavored products, with fruit flavors leading, followed by candy, dessert and other sweet options.

Pediatric nicotine pouches are the second‑most common product, with roughly 460,000 students reporting use. While overall tobacco use has declined since 2022, cigarette smoking among high schoolers remains low at 1.8%.

Health implications

The CDC warns that nicotine can interfere with brain regions responsible for attention, learning, mood and impulse control. No tobacco product, including e‑cigarettes, is safe for children, teens or young adults.

Calls to action for families and schools

Yolonda C. Richardson, president and CEO of the Campaign for Tobacco‑Free Kids, called the decline in youth tobacco use a public‑health success, but emphasized that more than two million students still use these products. She highlighted the high frequency of use among e‑cigarette users and the continued appeal of flavored options.

Brian King, executive vice president for U.S. programs at the same organization, stressed that the CDC’s primary tobacco‑prevention program has been eliminated, making parental and educator involvement even more critical. “All hands on deck” is needed to protect children from nicotine addiction.

Adults can help by staying informed about the range of nicotine products, monitoring what their children are exposed to, and maintaining ongoing conversations about the health risks. Resources for quitting and support are available through the Truth Initiative and other public‑health agencies.

Where to find help

Families seeking assistance can visit the Truth Initiative website for information on cessation programs. If anyone is struggling with substance‑use issues, the national drug‑abuse hotline (1‑888‑633‑3239) offers guidance and referrals.

By keeping the dialogue open and staying vigilant, parents and educators can help curb youth nicotine use and protect the health of the next generation.
