Dearborn businesses see surge in support after anti‑Muslim rally

Dearborn, Michigan – A day after an anti‑Muslim rally that attracted hundreds of participants and resulted in 22 arrests, local businesses reported a noticeable rise in customers and expressions of solidarity. The rally, which featured far‑right activist Jake Lang, was described by an Arab‑American shop owner as “awful,” but the following day saw a different atmosphere.

Business owners note increased patronage

“Since all the hate’s been going on, the support’s been really great,” said one small‑business proprietor, emphasizing that residents continue to favor locally‑owned stores. Several merchants told FOX 2 that foot traffic surged after the protest, with customers deliberately stopping by to show their support for the community.

Mayor Hammoud praises community response

Mayor Abdullah Hammoud observed a similar trend among residents. He recounted how some individuals who initially intended to join the agitators changed their plans after seeing Dearborn’s “beautiful American city.” One person, known online as “The Bearded Traveling Veteran,” publicly apologized on social media for his earlier assumptions about the city.

Hammoud, a native of Dearborn, stressed that the city’s focus remains on its residents’ daily lives. “We don’t have time to think about out‑of‑towners who want to come in and disrupt,” he said, adding that Dearborn will continue to promote a safe environment where every person can live their fullest life.

Police actions and arrests

Dearborn police confirmed that 22 individuals were arrested during the rally, ranging in age from 18 to 64 and coming from locations across Michigan as well as states such as New York and Tennessee. Police had previously warned people without official business before City Council not to attend the demonstration.

During a City Council meeting where Lang addressed officials, a group of protesters wearing swastikas gathered outside the library. Lang made incendiary remarks about white Christians being replaced in the city, prompting jeers from council members and a broader community outcry.

Looking ahead

With the upcoming election season, Hammoud anticipates further incidents but remains confident that the city’s unity will prevail. He referenced past agitators like Terry Jones, noting that Dearborn has consistently resisted attempts to sow division.

Local leaders and residents continue to emphasize the city’s inclusive character, encouraging newcomers and long‑time citizens alike to engage positively with the community.
