Philadelphia Police Identify Suspect in Fatal Shooting of Off‑Duty Officer Alhassane Barry

Philadelphia police announced Wednesday that they have identified the individual suspected in the fatal shooting of off‑duty Officer Alhassane Barry and the wounding of a 35‑year‑old man outside an after‑hours lounge on the 7200 block of Elmwood Avenue in Southwest Philadelphia.

Details of the incident

Officer Barry, 29, was shot early Sunday morning while leaving the establishment. Surveillance video released by the department shows Barry and the second victim engaged in an argument inside the lounge before the dispute moved outside. According to Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel, “At some point, there’s an assault and then a separation, then shots were fired by the one individual.” The motive for the altercation remains unclear.

Victims and response

Barry was pronounced dead at the scene. The second victim, a 35‑year‑old man, was transported to a local hospital and is listed in stable condition. Family members gathered for Barry’s funeral on Monday, with his sister, Idiatou Barry, describing him as “a really friendly, sweet, generous, giving person” and expressing pride in his service.

Barry had previously served in the military before joining the Philadelphia Police Department’s 12th District, where he was known for his dedication to public service.

Investigation status

Police have confirmed that they are in contact with the suspect’s attorney, but they have not released the suspect’s name because formal charges have not yet been filed. The department emphasized that the investigation is ongoing and that additional details will be shared as they become available.

Community impact

The shooting has reignited concerns among Philadelphia residents about safety in nightlife districts. Local leaders and community groups are urging law‑enforcement officials to provide timely updates and to work collaboratively with neighborhood associations to address public‑safety concerns.

Philadelphia Police Department spokespersons reiterated their commitment to a thorough investigation and to holding those responsible accountable under the law.
