U.S. Air Force C‑17 Returns to Christchurch After Russian Space‑Activity Warning

A U.S. Air Force C‑17 Globemaster III that departed Christchurch Airport on Tuesday morning was ordered to return after New Zealand’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) received a notice of potentially hazardous space activity. The warning originated from Russia’s State Air Traffic Management Corporation, which alerted the CAA to a planned missile launch and associated risks to international airspace within New Zealand’s Oceanic Flight Information Region (FIR).

Flight details and timing

According to flight‑tracking service Flightradar24, the aircraft – operating under the call sign ICE28 – left Christchurch around 9:00 a.m. local time and headed south toward Antarctica. Roughly 150 minutes later, just before 11:30 a.m., the plane turned around and landed back at Christchurch Airport.

Why the warning matters

The CAA explained that the Russian agency’s notification triggered a NOTAM (Notice to Airmen) to alert pilots of a “potentially hazardous” situation. While the notice does not prohibit aircraft from entering the area, it provides operators with information to make safety‑critical decisions. The CAA added that much of its Oceanic FIR lies over international waters, limiting its direct control over activities that could affect flight safety.

Context of the Antarctic flight

The flight was part of the annual Winter Fly‑in (WINFLY) program, a seasonal surge of operations that move personnel, equipment, and supplies between Christchurch and the U.S. Antarctic research stations at McMurdo and New Zealand’s Scott Base. WINFLY supports the upcoming summer research season, making timely transport essential for scientific work on the continent.

International coordination

New Zealand’s aviation authorities said they cooperate closely with foreign air‑traffic agencies to maintain safety across the vast 30‑million‑square‑kilometer Oceanic FIR. The recent Russian notification underscores the importance of real‑time information sharing, especially as missile tests and other space‑related activities can create unforeseen hazards for aircraft operating at high altitudes.

Responses and next steps

Both the U.S. Air Force and the U.S. Antarctic Program were contacted for comment but had not responded at the time of publication. CNN also reached out to the Russian State Air Traffic Management Corporation for further details.

The incident highlights the complex interplay of military logistics, international air‑space management, and the need for vigilant safety protocols when operating in remote regions such as Antarctica.
