Iranian clubs drawn against Qatar and UAE teams for AFC Champions League group stage

In a development that will affect fans of Iranian football across the nation, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) announced Tuesday that Tehran’s Esteghlal and Tabriz‑based Tractor have been placed in groups with clubs from the United Arab Emirates and Qatar. Because of the ongoing conflict in the region, all of the Iranian teams’ group‑stage matches will be played at neutral venues, with the first games scheduled for September 14.

Group‑stage opponents and venues

Esteghlal and Tractor will each face three opponents. The UAE representatives are Al Ain, Al Wasl and Shabab Al Ahli, while the Qatari clubs are Al Gharafa, Al Sadd and Al Shamal. The draw kept the Iranian sides away from the heavily favored Saudi Arabian clubs, which dominate the West zone of the AFC Champions League Elite.

Regional tension influences scheduling

The decision to hold Iranian matches in neutral countries follows a series of escalations that began after the United States and Israel launched strikes against Iran in February. Tehran responded by targeting sites in Qatar and the UAE, accusing the Gulf states of allowing American bases to be used for the attacks. Both Qatar and the United Arab Emirates have urged Iran to cease its retaliatory fire.

In early August, Iran claimed that three of its pilots who disappeared in March were being held in Qatar, a charge that Doha denied. The Iranian domestic league, which was suspended in February, resumed last weekend with one match played behind closed doors and others limited to reduced capacity.

Broader AFC Champions League context

The AFC Champions League Elite features two 16‑team regional zones. In the West zone, Saudi Arabia fields five clubs, including Al‑Ahli of Jeddah, which is seeking a third consecutive title, and Al‑Hilal, which aims for a fifth crown. Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al‑Nassr also returned to the competition after winning the Saudi Pro League in May.

In the East zone, Japanese clubs have reached the final in each of the past two editions, though neither Kawasaki Frontale nor Machida Zelvia qualified this year. South Korean sides Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors and Pohang Steelers are also in the mix, looking for additional championships.

Path to the knockout rounds

Each group will send its top eight teams to the round of 16. From the quarterfinals onward, all matches will be staged in Saudi Arabia, with the final set for May 1.

For Iranian supporters, the neutral‑site arrangement means traveling abroad to watch their clubs compete, a logistical challenge that underscores how geopolitics can shape sport. Nonetheless, the draw offers a clear path for Esteghlal and Tractor to advance, provided they can navigate the strong competition from their Gulf neighbors.
