Miami-Dade and Broward Counties Open Cooling Centers as Heat Hits 105‑109°F

South Florida residents should prepare for another sweltering day on Tuesday, with the National Weather Service forecasting feels‑like temperatures between 105°F and 109°F from mid‑morning through the evening. To protect the community, Miami‑Dade and Broward counties have opened a network of cooling centers where people can find shade, air‑conditioned relief, and basic hydration.

Where the cooling centers are located

Miami‑Dade County has designated more than 50 sites as cooling centers, ranging from public libraries and community centers to senior centers and recreation facilities. Broward County operates 15 locations, including municipal buildings and school gymnasiums. Each site is staffed by county employees or volunteers who monitor the space and ensure that visitors can stay comfortably cool.

What to expect at a cooling center

Visitors are encouraged to bring a bottle of water—preferably plain, cool water without caffeine, alcohol, or high sugar content—to stay hydrated. Most centers provide free water dispensers, and some offer light snacks. Seating is arranged to allow for social distancing, and the facilities are kept at a comfortable temperature throughout the day.

Safety tips from officials

Erika Benitez, a spokesperson for Miami‑Dade Fire Rescue, reminded residents that heat‑related emergencies can often be avoided with simple precautions. “It is important to drink plenty of cool fluids throughout the day to stay hydrated, but obviously avoid those that contain caffeine, alcohol, or high sugar content,” Benitez said. She also advised people to seek shade whenever possible and to take frequent breaks from outdoor activities, especially during the hottest hours between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m.

How to find a center near you

Both counties have posted up‑to‑date lists of cooling center locations on their official websites. Residents can also call the county’s non‑emergency line for the nearest site. Mobile apps and local news outlets are providing real‑time maps to help people locate the closest cooling center quickly.

Who should use the centers

The cooling centers are open to anyone who needs relief from the heat, but they are especially important for vulnerable populations such as seniors, young children, and individuals with chronic health conditions. Parents are urged to bring their children, and families are encouraged to check the centers early, as some locations may reach capacity during peak heat hours.

Additional resources

County health departments continue to monitor heat‑related illnesses and will issue alerts if conditions worsen. Residents can also sign up for text‑message alerts from local emergency management agencies for the latest updates on heat advisories and cooling‑center hours.

By taking proactive steps—staying hydrated, seeking shade, and using the available cooling centers—South Floridians can protect themselves and their families from the dangers of extreme heat.
