President Trump honors Santa Cruz teen lifeguard for dramatic ocean rescue

In a brief White House visit on Monday, President Donald Trump praised 16‑year‑old Ryder Williams of Santa Cruz for his quick action in rescuing a 10‑year‑old boy from the surf at Seabright State Beach last month. The rescue, captured on video and widely shared online, showed Williams and a fellow lifeguard pull the child from crashing Pacific waves.

Trump’s remarks

“This is a great story,” Trump said, adding that Williams had been a “winner” from the moment he began lifeguard training. The president emphasized the value of having lifeguards on duty, noting, “You have to have lifeguards around because you could go to the water. It looked beautiful that day, then the violent waves came in. That’s what amazes me so much. I studied it, I said, ‘This is incredible.’”

Williams speaks

Williams, dressed in his lifeguard uniform and tie, sat beside the president with the boy he saved, Nathanial Rai, on the other side. “In those dangerous moments we always try to fall back on our training,” Williams said, marking his first public comment since the video went viral. He expressed a future goal of becoming a firefighter after completing paramedic school, adding, “I hope everybody can take away from this and try to help more people. Look out for everybody around you and help as much as you can.”

State Parks perspective

California State Parks Aquatic Superintendent Justin McHenry attended the meeting with the boys’ parents and other officials. He noted that the state trains about 200 lifeguards each year, beginning at age 16, and praised the rescue as an example of the integrity and resilience the program seeks to instill. McHenry also raised the issue of affordability for lifeguards in Santa Cruz, where high housing costs make it difficult to retain staff who earn only slightly above minimum wage.

Local reaction

Photographer Scott Vander Dussen, who recorded the rescue, described it as the most intense he has ever witnessed and hopes the footage serves as a warning about ocean safety. Community members in Santa Cruz have lauded Williams’ bravery, noting that his actions underscore the critical role of trained volunteers in protecting beachgoers.

Looking ahead

Williams’ meeting with the president brings national attention to the challenges faced by coastal communities in maintaining robust lifeguard programs. While the White House visit highlighted the heroism of a local teen, it also shone a light on broader concerns about staffing, training costs, and housing affordability for those who keep the beaches safe.
