China Plans Year-Long Space Mission as Part of Moon Landing Ambitions

China is preparing to launch an astronaut on a year-long mission to its space station, a record duration for the nation, as part of its ambitious plans to land on the moon by 2030. The Shenzhou-23 mission is scheduled to launch from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwest China, carrying three astronauts aboard the Long March-2F Y23 carrier rocket.

The crew includes payload specialist Li Jiaying, a former Hong Kong police inspector, who will be the first astronaut from the city to participate in a Chinese space mission. Joining Li are commander Zhu Yangzhu and pilot Zhang Yuanzhi, both from the People’s Liberation Army’s astronaut division. One of these astronauts will remain on the Tiangong space station for a year, though the specific individual will be determined as the mission progresses.

China and U.S. in Lunar Race

This mission comes amid a growing competition with the United States to achieve a crewed moon landing. The U.S. aims to land astronauts on the moon by 2028 and establish a long-term lunar presence as a precursor to human exploration of Mars. In contrast, China is working towards a 2030 moon landing, with plans to establish a permanent lunar base by 2035 in collaboration with Russia.

China has been advancing its space capabilities, having sent astronauts to its space station nearly a dozen times since 2021. The Shenzhou missions typically involve six-month stays for trios of astronauts. The upcoming mission will also test new technologies, such as the first autonomous rapid rendezvous and docking procedure with the Tiangong station’s core module, which is crucial for the 2030 lunar mission.

In addition to its lunar ambitions, China is conducting groundbreaking experiments in space, including the world’s first human “artificial embryo” experiment. This involves studying the long-term residence, survival, and reproduction of human beings in space, using human stem cell samples sent to the Tiangong station.

While China continues to develop the necessary hardware and software for its lunar mission, including heavy-lift Long March-10 rockets and the Lanyue lunar lander, the country faces significant challenges to meet its 2030 deadline. Nonetheless, the Shenzhou-23 mission represents a significant step forward in China’s space exploration efforts.
