By-Election Results

Farage captured 22,239 votes, while his closest challenger, Count Binface, a satirical candidate, won 9,455 votes. The turnout was 44.37%. Britain’s major parties had declined to field candidates in the contest, dismissing it as a self-serving stunt.

Farage had called the by-election to allow voters to be his ‘judge’ amid the allegations. He maintained that he had done nothing wrong and had followed the rules. The parliamentary investigation into his finances, which had been suspended when he resigned his seat, has been reactivated.

Investigation Reopened

The investigation, which was opened on May 13 under Rule 5, ‘Failure to register an interest,’ will continue. If the investigation leads to a qualifying suspension from Parliament, it could trigger a recall petition. A by-election would follow only if the recall petition reached the required threshold of support from eligible voters in the constituency.
