An illegal immigrant from Guatemala, Jose Chajon-Raxon, died after experiencing a medical emergency at the Delaney Hall detention facility in Newark, New Jersey. Chajon-Raxon was detained by ICE on July 18 and had a medical emergency the next day.
Medical Emergency and Death
A nurse responded to the medical emergency and witnessed Chajon-Raxon experiencing seizure-like activity. Medical workers were called, and Chajon-Raxon was taken to a hospital. The Department of Homeland Security said Chajon-Raxon was released from ICE custody on July 22 but did not provide more details on his death.
The Delaney Hall facility has previously come under scrutiny from human rights advocates and Democrats following the deaths of other immigrants in ICE detention. ICE says detainees are given appropriate medical care, but rights groups have raised concerns about medical care and living conditions at the facilities.
