Lincoln Square’s Michelin-Starred Atelier Closes Due to Financial Struggles

Lincoln Square’s culinary scene has taken a hit with the closure of Atelier, a Michelin-starred restaurant that had become a local favorite since its opening in 2023. The restaurant, known for its innovative tasting menu and commitment to sourcing from Midwestern farms, was a beacon of fine dining in the community.

Community Impact

Owner Tim Lacey, a long-time Lincoln Square resident and acclaimed bartender, announced the closure through a heartfelt note on the restaurant’s website and social media. ‘It pains me tremendously to say this but, we’ve had to close Atelier. This was not a decision made lightly, but due to financial issues closing was our only option,’ Lacey wrote. The exact date of the restaurant’s last service remains unclear, as Lacey did not respond to requests for further comment.

Atelier first opened its doors at 4835 N. Western Ave. in 2023, with chef Christian Hunter at the helm. The restaurant quickly gained acclaim, earning a Michelin star in the fall of the same year, a distinction held by only 14 other Chicago establishments. After Hunter departed to open a new venture, chef Bradyn Kawcak took over the kitchen, continuing the restaurant’s tradition of excellence.

Efforts to Sustain

In an effort to expand and remain in the neighborhood, Atelier relocated a few blocks south on Western Avenue in October 2025, following a successful fundraising effort that brought in $485,340 from investors. The new location offered a larger dining space, accommodating more patrons while maintaining the intimate atmosphere that Atelier was known for.

Despite these efforts, financial challenges proved insurmountable. In his closing announcement, Lacey expressed gratitude to his team, including chef Kawcak and Beverage Director Ali Martin, and thanked the loyal customers who supported Atelier throughout its journey. ‘I can’t thank you enough for your faith in Atelier. This is not the way I ever wanted this to end, and it kills me to have to do this,’ he shared.

The closure of Atelier marks a significant loss for Lincoln Square’s dining landscape, highlighting the challenges faced by local businesses in maintaining operations amidst financial pressures.
