In a significant enforcement action, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers seized cocaine valued at over $600,000 at the Hidalgo International Bridge earlier this month. The incident underscores the ongoing efforts by federal authorities to secure the border and prevent illegal narcotics from entering the United States.
Details of the Seizure
The seizure took place on May 1, when CBP officers at the Hidalgo International Bridge referred a Chrysler Pacifica for secondary inspection. A K-9 unit had alerted officers to the vehicle, prompting further examination. The driver, identified as a 48-year-old Mexican citizen, was taken into custody following the discovery.
Using advanced nonintrusive imaging technology, officers scanned the minivan and uncovered 18 packages concealed within. These packages contained a total of 45.23 pounds, or 20.52 kilograms, of suspected cocaine. The estimated street value of the narcotics is approximately $604,026.
Commitment to Border Security
Hidalgo Port Director Carlos Rodriguez praised the officers’ dedication and the effective use of technology in this operation. “This seizure reflects our officers’ steadfast commitment to the border security mission and reflects the effective use of technology and inspection skill,” Rodriguez stated. He emphasized that such enforcement actions are crucial in preventing narcotics from infiltrating communities and causing harm.
The narcotics and the vehicle were seized on-site, and Homeland Security Investigations agents arrested the driver. A criminal investigation into the suspected smuggling attempt is currently underway.
Ongoing Efforts
This seizure is part of broader border security and narcotics enforcement efforts led by the Department of Homeland Security and CBP. These initiatives aim to combat drug smuggling and enhance the safety and security of communities along the border.
