Robert Gilman, a 32-year-old Massachusetts teacher and former Marine, was freed from Russia after President Donald Trump said he spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin about his release. Gilman was detained in 2022 on charges of beating a police officer and was later convicted of attacking a prison inspector and assaulting a guard.

Gilman’s family and U.S. officials have alleged that his detention was wrongful and that he was subjected to abusive treatment. His sister, Lexie Hudson, credited Trump and U.S. Sen. Ed Markey of Massachusetts with bringing about his release.
Gilman will arrive at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland outside of Washington and will be medically and psychologically assessed and treated at a military hospital in Texas. His release comes as a positive step, but concerns remain about the five other Americans who are still imprisoned in Russia.
