Lindsay Clancy Trial

Lindsay Clancy, a 35-year-old mother from Massachusetts, is on trial for the murder of her three children: Cora, 5; Dawson, 3; and Callan, 8 months. This week, the court heard testimony about Clancy’s mental health status before and after the killings, as well as her physical injuries from her suicide attempt.

Mental Health Testimony

Two psychiatrists who treated Clancy in the weeks and months before the killings testified about her declining mental health. Dr. Jennifer Tufts, a licensed psychiatrist, described Clancy’s interactions with her over roughly a dozen sessions from September 2022 to January 2023. Clancy reported feeling overwhelmed, anxious, and struggling to sleep-train her baby.

Clancy’s diary entries about her parenting stresses and postpartum issues were also read aloud in court. She wrote about feeling guilty and desperate for a mental break from taking care of her children. The prosecution argued that Clancy acted intentionally and rationally when she killed her children, while the defense argued that she was in the midst of a psychotic episode stemming from postpartum mental illness.

Physical and Emotional State

The court also heard about Clancy’s physical and emotional state during the trial. She vocally answered the judge’s questions about a legal issue and sobbed during difficult testimony about the autopsy of her infant son. Clancy’s friends and family members testified about their concerns for her well-being and the well-being of her children.
