Rio Rancho Public Schools are focusing on campus safety this year by utilizing advanced security systems and addressing concerns of student vaping. District officials said no weapons were brought onto campus last year, though their systems detected replicas or toy weapons.

Security Measures

The district employs extensive security measures, including camera systems, Evolv weapons-detection technology at most high schools and middle schools, trained security personnel, and support from Rio Rancho police and school resource officers. Officials said the Evolv technology helps discourage people from bringing weapons onto campus.

While guns have not been a significant issue, vaping has become a concern. “We’re looking into new technology to detect vapes on students so that we can hopefully curb that problem, that not just what we’re dealing with, the world is dealing with right now, at least the United States,” said Wyndham Kemsley, executive director of communications for Rio Rancho Public Schools.

The district also restricts campus access, continues to install electronic door locks, and is improving fencing around schools.
