As the new school year approaches, many families in San Antonio are facing the challenge of back-to-school expenses. To help alleviate some of this financial burden, Tim Torres, the owner of Cut and Shave Barber and Beauty College, is offering free haircuts to kids in need.
A Labor of Love
Torres and his students have been providing free haircuts at back-to-school events across the city. Torres, who was diagnosed with a brain tumor in 2018, was inspired to give back to his community. "A lot of kids have to go to school without haircuts. So if they look good, they can feel good, and they can perform good in the classroom," he said.
For parents like Yessica Orenday, who has three school-aged children and a newborn, the free haircuts are a huge help. "We're enormously grateful. I mean we're blessed," she said. Orenday estimated that the free haircuts saved her family over $150.
The free haircuts are not only a financial help, but also a way to boost kids' confidence. "Maybe more kids will be nice to them and give them compliments, help them boost their confidence," said Chris Olivares, a barber student.
Families in need can visit Cut & Shave Barber College every Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. through the end of August to receive a free haircut. The college is located at 1139 Gembler Rd., San Antonio, TX 78219, and can be reached at (210) 273-8340.
