Rep. Henry Cuellar, a Democrat from Texas, has issued a warning to his party about the influence of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA). Cuellar claims that the DSA is trying to use the Democratic Party as a vehicle to launch a radical agenda.
DSA’s Radical Platform
Cuellar argues that DSA candidates often hide their more extreme platform ideas behind softer talking points to win Democratic seats. He noted that the DSA’s platform includes radical views such as restructuring the Supreme Court, abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), defunding police, and having open borders.
Cuellar called on fellow Democrats to openly reject the DSA’s positions, stating that he rejects what the DSA is doing and considers their platform to be radical. He also noted that Democratic socialist candidates often focus on issues of affordability, housing, and the cost of living to win people over, rather than discussing their more radical agenda items.
Cuellar has firsthand experience being primaried by socialists, having been targeted by the DSA and Justice Democrats in two past primaries. He won those primaries by running on strong border security and supporting oil and gas jobs.
