Trump Oversees Lincoln Memorial Pool Cleanup, Blames Biden for Maintenance Delay

President Donald Trump posted new photos showing a sample test at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in Washington, D.C., part of a high-profile renovation tied to America’s 250th anniversary. The images and his Truth Social updates have sparked praise from supporters and a legal challenge from the Cultural Landscape Foundation, while Interior Department officials and White House spokespeople have weighed in on progress and materials.

The shared photos capture the basin with the Lincoln Memorial at one end and the Washington Monument at the other, the water mirroring blue skies and fluffy clouds. Trump celebrated the look and timing on his social feed, writing, “Looking really good! Should be completed before the Fourth of July, our target date,” signaling his confidence the work will meet the Independence Day deadline.

The president said crews upgraded materials and refined surface treatments to extend the pool’s lifespan and boost its visual impact. In his post he added, “I’ve made this a much larger job than originally contemplated for purposes of Beauty, and a much longer life,” and emphasized a higher-quality sealer and more reflectivity to deliver a lasting finish.

Supporters say the work represents a smart, efficient investment to restore a national landmark ahead of the 250th, a tangible achievement to show visitors and citizens alike. The administration has framed the effort as both beautification and long-term maintenance, arguing it improves durability while restoring the civic presence of the pool.

Not everyone agrees. Critics raised alarms over an “American flag blue” coloration and objected to the use of industrial-grade materials, prompting the Cultural Landscape Foundation to sue to halt the project. In its complaint the group warned, “The vivid blue coating will fundamentally alter the visual and experiential character of the pool and the broader Lincoln Memorial Grounds landscape,” asserting that the change could shift the site’s meaning for millions of visitors.

Charles A. Birnbaum, president and CEO of the Cultural Landscape Foundation, told reporters the core dispute hinges on compliance with preservation law. He stressed “the primary issue is whether the law was followed before the painting began,” and highlighted that “Since the Reflecting Pool is listed in the National Register of Historic Places, reviews of work that would alter a key character-defining feature of this important national symbol should be subject to reviews under Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act; and this project should have been reviewed by the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts, as other work on the Reflecting Pool has been reviewed over the past century.”

The TCLF is a national, D.C.-based education and advocacy organization, not a preservation organization. Its lawsuit and public comments have put legal and procedural questions at the center of a debate that had previously focused on aesthetics and timing.

Trump has repeatedly defended the technical choices, saying crews “decided to go to a much higher level of repair, using industrial strength materials, which will give a longer life, and a better look,” and reporting that the job is moving ahead of schedule. That message is aimed at reassuring the public that the pool will be serviceable and attractive for the upcoming celebrations.

Reports flagged issues such as bubbles, small holes and color inconsistencies in sections that were partially refinished, and noted about 35 percent of the pool surface had been coated while important joints remained untouched. Interior Department spokesperson Katie Martin responded on the status, saying, “The final product will be uniform, as the plan depicts,” and that adjustments to the process would ensure efficient completion.

The White House has echoed the optimistic timeline and emphasized cost control. White House spokeswoman Taylor Rogers declared, “the restoration effort will be completed ahead of America’s 250th celebrations and for a fraction of the cost that the former Presidents Obama and Biden squandered only to worsen its condition. Thanks to President Trump, the Reflecting Pool will be restored to all its glory!”

The work at the Reflecting Pool has become a symbolic battleground: for supporters it’s a visible, practical restoration led by the president; for opponents it raises preservation questions and legal scrutiny about process and appearance. Officials and advocacy groups continue to exchange filings and statements as crews press toward the summer target date.
