Ruidoso Downs Racetrack is temporarily closing its casino and horse race simulcast operations after a New Mexico Department of Transportation inspection found a damaged culvert at the facility’s main entrance poses a potential safety risk.
Cause of Closure
The closure follows an inspection requested by racetrack officials after concerns about the condition of the culvert, which sustained damage during flooding last year. According to Ruidoso Downs General Manager Rick Baugh, the inspection confirmed that closing the entrance was the safest course of action.
The decision remains subject to approval by the New Mexico Gaming Control Board, which is scheduled to hold an emergency meeting on Wednesday, July 22, in Albuquerque to consider the matter.
Impact on Operations
While casino and simulcast operations will be suspended, the horse racing season will continue on its scheduled dates at Downs of Albuquerque. Live racing is set for Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, as well as Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 7.
Ruidoso Downs also announced the New Mexico Quarter Horse and Thoroughbred Sale scheduled for Aug. 15 and that the All American Select Sale Sept. 4-5 will continue at the Ruidoso Downs Horse Sales Pavilion.
