The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Dallas Field Office is working to raise awareness about human trafficking in Texas, particularly in the Dallas area, ahead of World Day Against Trafficking in Persons on July 30.
Understanding Human Trafficking
According to Jeremy Wright, an assistant special agent in the FBI’s violent crime branch, human trafficking is a crime that involves using force, fraud, or coercion to exploit individuals for labor or services, often of a sexual nature. Wright emphasized that this can happen to anyone, regardless of age or background.
Wright explained that the most vulnerable populations include minors, immigrants, and adults struggling with addiction. These individuals are often targeted by predators who exploit their vulnerabilities and offer them a sense of connection or purpose.
Local Cases and Red Flags
In 2023, a sex trafficking ring was discovered in a quiet Plano neighborhood, resulting in multiple arrests, including the alleged ringleader, William Garland. The case highlights the importance of being vigilant and aware of red flags, such as multiple people living in a single home, being transported to and from work, and being controlled by someone else.
The FBI urges everyone to be aware of these red flags and to report any suspicious activity to the authorities. The FBI Dallas Field Office can be contacted 24/7 at (972) 559-5000 or through tips.fbi.gov.
