In Mission Canyon, a no parking rule has been activated due to red flag warnings from the National Weather Service. The rule, which was put in place after the 2009 Jesusita fire, prohibits parking on the side of the road in designated areas to ensure safe evacuation routes.
Background
The Jesusita fire destroyed 80 homes in the area, and property owners do not want to be evacuating at the same time hikers and their vehicles are also leaving the area. The California Highway Patrol is responsible for enforcement, ticketing, and towing if necessary.
Some hikers were unaware of the no parking rule, and the area has warning signs to alert drivers. The Botanic Gardens in the area also has a policy to close on red flag days.
