The United States Mint will start producing a new $1 coin bearing President Donald Trump’s face, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Wednesday. The coin is designed to honor the enduring legacy of liberty and patriotism.
Design and Production
One side of the coin features Trump’s face with the word “Liberty” engraved at the top. Beneath Trump’s face are the years 1776-2026, representing the nation’s 250th birthday. The reverse side depicts the presidential seal with “250” inscribed at the center.
The coin is currently in production and will be available beginning in the fall. It will be made with non-precious metals but have a gold-like finish.
Controversy and Precedent
Some are criticizing the new $1 coins, pointing to laws that no coins should be made that bear the image of a living former or current President. However, Treasury officials call the coins “collectibles,” designed to commemorate America’s 250th birthday. They pointed to a precedent, saying that then-President Calvin Coolidge appeared alongside George Washington on the half-dollar for the nation’s 150th anniversary.
